Pinpointing Elusive Ground Faults in Motor Control Centers Using Advanced Monitoring

This case study details how persistent main breaker trips in a Motor Control Center were diagnosed using a Revolution power analyzer and Flex CTs. By continuously monitoring current imbalances, the system captured intermittent ground faults that standard checks missed. The analysis revealed that a seldom-used material handler motor with a broken fan was causing windings to ground, leading to breaker trips. The approach enabled precise event correlation and long-term monitoring, ultimately identifying the root cause and preventing future outages.

Key topics include:

- Equipment Setup
- The Data
- Case Study: Ground Fault Detection
- The Cause

Why utilities should care:
Continuous high-resolution monitoring enables early detection of intermittent faults, reduces unplanned outages, and supports targeted maintenance by correlating electrical events with operational data. This approach enhances reliability and operational efficiency in critical power systems.
