Accurate Event Duration from Interval Data

This white paper introduces a method to estimate the duration of short power quality events, such as voltage sags from motor starts, using only one-minute interval stripchart data. Unlike prior techniques that required precise event timestamps, this approach leverages statistical averaging across multiple events to yield accurate cycle-level duration estimates and even allows for back-calculation of event timestamps. The method is validated against waveform data and shown to be robust when using clean, well-separated event data.

Key topics include:

- Background and Previous Methods
- Event Duration Calculation with Interval Data
- Data Preparation and Analysis
- Statistical Validation of Results
- Estimating Event Timestamps

Why utilities should care:
Enables precise identification and analysis of transient events using only standard interval data, reducing reliance on high-resolution monitoring and simplifying data requirements for power quality investigations and operational decision-making.
